10 Things You Should Know About The iPhone 8

You're probably wondering why it's taking so long for the next iPhone to be released. I think it's probably because this year, Apple is celebrating the iPhone’s 10th anniversary, and seemingly they will be looking to make it a blast.

There's no official information yet on the phone details, what I found round the web are rumors so you ought to take this with a pinch of salt.

But rumors do have an ounce of truth in them, don't they? 😏

Now here's what you should know

1.Design

It seems Apple will be moving from their traditional design to what I call a modern style design. They're following the latest trend in the smartphone world - increasing screen to bezel ratio. This means you'll be seeing bigger screens and smaller bezels.

There have been quite a lot of speculations about the look of the upcoming iPhone.

Apple made a mistake – they accidentally pushed out a firmware update for a new device, HomePod smart speaker that will be available at the end of the year. iOS developers dug through the code, and they found an image of the iPhone 8.


We are used to those borders at the top and bottom of the screen, and the borders, we can all agree – were pretty thick. At the image developers found, we see the edge-to-edge screen which is something completely different.

Some speculations say the iPhone 8 will not have the aluminium body. Instead, it will have a glass-backed body, the one we saw for the last time on the iPhone 4s. If you think about glass, you may think about the fact it is more fragile compared to aluminium. Don’t let this scare you and here is why.

Things have changed in the past few years in the glass technology. Thus, the materials are much stronger, especially Gorilla Glass. Why glass instead of aluminium? It may prevent damage and breakage.

Also, rumors say Apple will release three iPhone models. Some will be more and some will be less expensive. The one will be the all new and premium iPhone 8, and other two will probably be S upgrades. Will all of three have a glass-backed body? Some speculations say they will, some say they won’t. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, KGI Securities analyst, the more expensive model will come with stainless steel frame. The less expensive models will probably come with the aluminium frame.

When it comes to color options, some reports mention 4 and even more. One of the options is “mirror-like”. It sounds great, right?



iPhone 8: Display

What about the display? The speculation that started last year is still alive. At least one of the new iPhone models will feature a curved OLED display.

“The OLED versions of the new iPhone will all have curved screens as Apple ordered only plastic OLED – not glass – from Samsung Display. Samsung is capable of supplying a little less than 100 million units of curved OLED displays to Apple,” the source familiar with the matter told the told the Korea Herald back in December 2016.

OLEDs offer many advantages including much better power efficiency, better viewing angles, and more. These don’t break as easily as glass, but the disadvantage is they are prone to scratches as the plastic is softer than glass. Displays will feature True Tone technology along with Ion-X glass.



iPhone 8: No Physical Home Button

As I mentioned earlier, Apple accidentally pushed out a firmware update for a HomePod smart speaker, and Steve Troughton-Smith and Guilherme Rambo iOS developers who dug through the code found many interesting things.

The image above shows there is no available space for the home button, and that’s pretty obvious. But, if you are sceptical, and would like to see more evidence, take a look at this tweet.


iPhone 8: Facial recognition

The next thing I ought toention is facial recognition feature. Many reports said Apple has been working on the front-facing camera that will include 3D sensing capabilities for the face recognition.

The image clearly shows Apple is giving its best to use as much screen as possible. It seems the area on the top of the screen will be used for the front facing camera and the facial recognition. Again, iOS developers found some evidence for this as well.

“I can confirm reports that HomePod’s firmware reveals the existence of upcoming iPhone’s infra-red face unlock in BiometricKit and elsewhere”, Steve Troughton-Smith tweeted.

It also seems Apple will replace Touch ID with facial recognition.



iPhone 8: Water resistance

The iPhone 7 came with the IP67 certification. It will be some improvements in this department, as it seems the iPhone 8 will come with the IP68 certification. The phones that also have the same IP68 certification are Samsung S8 and Samsung S8 Plus.

If you are not sure what this means, the IP stands for the International Protection Marking. When it comes to digits, the first one shows resistance to dust, the second one shows resistance to water. The all new iPhone will probably be able to be in the water (up to 1.5 m) for 30 minutes.



iPhone 8: Wireless charging

The rumor that existed for a long time, and didn’t see the light of the day on previous iPhone models may do that with iPhone 8. It is the wireless charging feature. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple will finally introduce this feature on the new iPhone.

Guilherme Rambo found, let’s say an evidence, that this may come true.

“The battery widget will use a different icon for the new iPhone, this suggests a different charging mechanism.”, Rambo tweeted.



iPhone 8: The name

You may wonder why the section for the name because we all mention iPhone 8. And it sounds completely logical to be iPhone 8 as we know the Apple’s naming scheme. But, this year, Apple is celebrating the iPhone’s tenth birthday, and it’s a big deal. So, with that in mind, you can expect something completely different when it comes to naming.

Some speculations say the all new iPhone may be named iPhone Pro, iPhone X, and even iPhone Edition. Well, you will have to wait and see what Apple decided once they unravel the phone.



iPhone 8: Other features

It seems that Apple is planning to support the longer battery life by using a stacked logic board design and the OLED displays that are more power efficient. The phone may also come with the brand new 3D touch technology, virtual home button, upgraded storage and memory, fast charging technology, and Apple’s next-generation processor.

There is also improved augmented reality.


The all new iPhone will come with the latest software version, iOS 11 that brings many new features. Some of it are Do not disturb while driving, Type to Siri, and the ability to customize the control center.



iPhone 8: Release date

Most of previous iPhone models were launched in September. So, many predictions say the same thing will happen with the iPhone 8. However, let’s not get our hopes up. Why? Because many sources mention possible delays and supplies shortages.

The new iPhone 8 could be introduced in September, and I hope that will be the case. But when it comes to the time when the users will get their hands on the device, some mention the late fourth quarter of the year and even 2018. You will have to wait and see.



iPhone 8: The price

Last, but not least, the price. It is something many people are curious about. How much money will they have to spend if they want to own a brand new iPhone? If you are an iPhone fan, and if you are planning to upgrade, well, I can say one thing – keep on saving. The prices that are mentioned start at $850 and may go all the way up to $1200.

It will all depend on the model, as I have mentioned Apple will launch three new iPhones. They all have one thing in common – they will be pretty expensive.




The new iPhone 8 will definitely look different, and it will come with many improvements in terms of technologies, display, storage, memory, battery life and features. Will all of this come true? Well, you’ll see.

In the past, many rumors about the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 7 didn’t see the light of the day. I hope the story will be different with the iPhone 8 as many of these things sound pretty amazing.
